Autoimmunity in Families - Sarah Zielsdorf, MD, MS (2021 Conference) (LDN, low dose naltrexone)
This presentation discusses the heterogeneity of autoimmune expression, and that autoimmunity tends to run in families. There are genetic, ethnic factors, and environmental differences in them, known as epigenetics. By adopting a healthy lifestyle coupled with an adequate and regular supply of the appropriate factors, we can trigger healthy gene expression.
One autoimmune disease is a risk factor for additional autoimmune diseases. She stresses the importance of taking a thorough family history, at least three generations on both sides if known; and talks on the screening for autoimmunity, and symptoms that should prompt testing. 80% of patients diagnosed with autoimmune diseases are female. Autoimmunity tends to be expressed in females at times of hormone change throughout lifespan. Case studies are discussed, and treatment and follow-up is given.
