This case report by rheumatologist Scott Zashin, MD details the experience of a 79-year-old former teacher suffering from chronic widespread pain for over three decades. Despite extensive prior treatments including medications, injections, and therapies, significant relief remained elusive. The report highlights the patient's positive response to Low Dose Naltrexone (LDN), demonstrating its potential efficacy in managing persistent fibromyalgia symptoms.
In the second case report, a 79year-old teacher was referred by her son to surgeon a year ago. She complained of widespread pain for over 30 years. Her pain was characterized as a burning sensation involving her arms and legs. She noted non-rrestful sleep and fatigue, but there was no history of snoring which might indicate sleep apnea.
At the time of her visit, she was taking traditine. She reported having numerous injections in her spine and soft tissues without significant improvement. She had tried physical therapy, acupuncture, and cognitive behavioral therapy without success and failed deluxitine and gabapentin. Topical lidocaine patches were not helpful. While NSAIDs helped, they adversely affected her kidneys. Her exam confirmed widespread myofascial pain in four quadrants and I diagnosed her to have fibromyalgia. She elected to start LDN. One month after starting treatment, she felt significantly better with improved pain. She was seen in my office last month, having been on LDN for a year at 2 milligrams daily and continues to feel well.
