How does Low Dose Naltrexone (LDN) help with Hypothyroid?
How does Low Dose Naltrexone help with hypothyroid? Can Naltrexone help me if I am weaning off Wellbutrin by way of slow titration?
That's a great question. Let's start with the first part there. How does Naltrexone help with hypothyroidism?
So, Naltrexone in low doses, anywhere from 0 .1 to 4 .5, maybe 5 mg, works to cause the thyroid to work more efficiently. But some people who have low functioning thyroid are not 100% low functioning thyroid.
Sometimes they will have waves of high functioning thyroid where they feel kind of manic and anxious and irritable. And that's because their thyroid is sending off all of these antibodies that are causing some of these issues. And with that, Naltrexone can help reduce the antibody load, reduce the inflammation as well, so that those antibodies are not gonna trigger any other organs subsequently.
Now, if somebody is taking thyroid medication and they're starting Low Dose Naltrexone, we need to test their full thyroid panel about every four to six weeks until those thyroid numbers start to normalize. Because if we don't, and they're taking thyroid supplement, we could actually give them too much medication, that their regular dose could become too much for them over a period of time.
Now, if you're weaning off Wellbutrin, which is Bupropion, Naltrexone can help with those sensations of depression and anxiety as well.
So we also use Wellbutrin for weight loss. There's actually a commercially available product that combines the Bupropion with Low Dose Naltrexone. And we've seen that it actually helps cut cravings, but then helps us to lose weight, which is fantastic for a lot of people that everybody can probably use a few pounds shed off.
So yes, Low Dose Naltrexone can do that. You don't necessarily have to take two doses. You don't have to take different doses. You could literally, as the Low Dose Naltrexone is working for Hypothyroidism, it can also help with weight loss as well.
So very similar dosing schedules.
