I'm starting tonight on 0 .5 milligram. If I have side effects, should I give it a few days or longer before trying a lower dose? 

Yes, give it a few days. So even at 0 .5 milligram, if you're starting that at bedtime, some people will have perhaps vivid dreams which can cause insomnia in some situations and those side effects usually go away in about five to seven days. 

So give that a shot and see what happens. You can always decrease your dose. You can ask for a liquid that is a little bit less strength so that you can more easily manipulate that dosing.
