Opioid Antagonism for Endometriosis and Adenomyosis

This presentation by Dr. Sarah Zielsdorf, MD, MS explores the role of opioid antagonism in treating endometriosis and adenomyosis. Research indicates a shift in brain opioid and NMDA receptor expression in women with endometriosis. Studies reveal significantly lower plasma beta-endorphin levels in infertile women with endometriosis compared to those with normal fertility, suggesting a potential therapeutic target.

Dr. Sarah Zielsdorf, MD, MS: These examples now start to show the reason for why we want to promote the blockade or partial blockade or opioid antagonism. So blockade blockade of the opioid receptor for these conditions of endo and adinomiosis. And we can see in this paper that it showed that endometriosis is associated with a shift in muopioid and NMDA receptor expression in the brain specifically in the periqueductal gray area. We can see in this is um Dr. this goes back to Dr. Hilder's work at Kraton University in the 1960s. But we have shown that the beta endorphin levels that are produced in normal fertility conditions are much higher than those that are infertile or those with endometriosis. And we can see that plasma beta endorphine levels during the ludal phase or the second half of the cycle in women of normal fertility are significantly higher, more than double than that of those that are infertile.
