Understanding Adenomyosis: Definitions and Clarifications

This educational video by Dr. Sarah Zielsdorf, MD, MS offers a clear definition of adenomyosis, a benign condition where endometrial glands grow into the uterine muscle. It details common symptoms such as abnormal bleeding, pelvic pain, and infertility. The presentation also clarifies that adenomyosis can coexist with endometriosis, referencing research on potential environmental links.

Dr. Sarah Zielsdorf, MD, MS: Here's the definition of adenomyosis. Adenomyosis consists of the presence of ectopic meaning outside ectopic endometrial glands within the underlying myometrium which is a part of the uterus. It is a benign condition. Symptoms include abnormal uterine bleeding, chronic pelvic pain and infertility. There is a lack of standardization for diagnostic criteria for the ultrasound diagnosis and MRI characterization for adenomiosis.
